Scope and Contents

Robert Cadell (1788-1849) was the partner of Archibald Constable, and, after the dissolution of that partnership in 1825, the sole publisher of Walter Scott's novels. His papers reflect his personal and business relations with Scott and other authors, as well as his family affairs.

Scope and Contents Ronald Fairbairn was born in Edinburgh in 1889 and educated at Merchiston Castle School and the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester, Kiel and Strasbourg. During the First World War he served as a Territorial in the Royal Garrison Artillery with postings in Egypt and Palestine. He was Assistant Physician at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Mental Diseases from 1923-1924 and subsequently forged a career in medical psychology. He produced numerous psychological publications. Scope and Contents

Includes papers concerning Bruce's directorships of the African Lakes Company and the Imperial British East Africa Company, and to Liberal Unionist organisations and activities in Scotland.

The papers, originally contained in a mahogany filing cabinet with alphabetically labelled drawers, is mostly, but not exclusively, Bruce’s personal, rather than his business correspondence, mainly from 1885-1893 and largely concerned with his political and African interests.
